Aquarium Operations Manager
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Aquarium educators focus on interacting with the public to share your knowledge of Narragansett Bay and how Save The Bay works to protect and improve the Bay. You are responsible for teaching guests about the ecology of the Bay at our touch tanks and other interactive exhibits, providing a high-quality educational guest interaction that drives engagement and awareness, as the primary link between visitors, marine life and our mission.
RESPOSIBILITIES:
- Exhibit Interpretation: Engaging guests with information regarding animals and our ecosystem.
- Touch Tank Management: Supervising touch tanks to ensure animal and visitor safety. This includes leading appropriate handling of species by the public, monitoring animal behavior, and ensuring areas around the touch tank are clean and safe.
- Program Delivery: Leading, or assisting with, formal presentations, tours, open hour and after hour programming.
- Customer Engagement: Proactively initiating conversations, answering questions, and creating a positive, safe experience for visitors.
- Continuous Learning: Proactively seeking new, relevant information to broaden your knowledge and skills. Sharing that knowledge with colleagues and the public.
- Onboarding: Assist in onboarding new volunteer, intern and staff educators. Support and encourage an environment of learning and enrichment.
- Safety/Maintenance: Ensuring floor safety protocols, keeping educational stations clean, and reporting animal health concerns to aquarist staff.
- Develop familiarity with all Save The Bay and Aquarium programs, offerings and events to be well informed and a good source of information.
- Support the team structure of the organization by remaining responsive to the needs of the management and supervisors, filling in when and where needed as directed.
- Cross training to cover the admission desk as needed.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge and/or background in marine ecology, environmental science, or environmental education.
- Specific knowledge of Narragansett Bay and its watershed is a plus.
- Enjoy working with people of various ages, especially children.
- Experience working with the public in a customer service role.
- Thrive in a fast-paced, high energy environment.
- Ability to work well on a team and collaborate effectively with others.
- Weekday and Weekend availability required.
- Comfortable handling marine animals, public speaking and initiating conversations with guests.
- Must be flexible, reliable, and have positive energy.
- First Aid/CPR certification a plus.
- BCI check required.
- Spanish or another multilingual skill a plus.
- Teaching at our touch tanks requires the ability to stand on your feet for extended periods of time, handling marine animals throughout the day.
SALARY & BENEFITS:
$16 per hour
