Groundwork Rhode Island, Winner of The 2026 Environmental Achievement Award

Groundwork Rhode Island (GWRI) is a nonprofit, community-based organization that helps make Rhode Island’s urban communities healthier and more resilient places to live by improving the physical environment and creating economic opportunities for local residents through job training, employment, and social venture programs.

GWRI achieves its mission by leading a variety of urban stewardship programs and projects that train and employ lower-income Rhode Islanders, including youth and those with past conviction records. Groundwork RI works with community residents through their job training programs on stormwater management and brownfield remediation. Job training graduates become part of Storm Crew and receive hands-on experience installing and maintaining green stormwater infrastructure.

Save The Bay collaborates with Groundwork RI on a variety of environmental stewardship initiatives, from designing and installing stormwater retrofits to engaging community members in planning a more climate-resilient Providence waterfront.
