NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — On July 19, swimmers will traverse the roughly two-mile stretch between Newport’s Naval War College and Potter Cove in Jamestown for Save The Bay’s biggest annual fundraiser.

Registration for “The Swim” opened on Monday. According to the nonprofit, the event usually brings hundreds of swimmers and kayakers to Rhode Island’s waters in addition to hundreds of volunteers.

“Since its inception in 1977, The Swim has been a community event that not only raises funds for Save The Bay’s mission to protect and improve Narragansett Bay, but also demonstrates the role we can collectively play to ensure our greatest natural treasure stays healthy for future generations” said Save The Bay’s Director of Operations Maureen Fogarty.

Swimmers who participate will get a unique view of the Claiborne Pell Bridge. Rhode Islander Cheryl Hatch has been participating in the event for a decade.

“During The Swim each year, I take the time to marvel at the sky, the water, the beauty, and remember what a once-a-year gift we have to cross the Bay,” she said.

The registration fee for qualifying swim participants is $50 with a $400 fundraising minimum. There are also virtual options and remote challenges for the swim which have a $25 registration fee and a $200 fundraising minimum.
