Founded in 1987 by a group of concerned Block Islanders, the Committee for the Great Salt Pond has achieved remarkable success in achieving its mission to “protect and enhance the environmental quality of the Great Salt Pond and its watershed […]”

Over the past 26 years, the CGSP has been the voice for the Pond, raising awareness about the issues that threaten it, pressing for improved wastewater management, protecting and restoring habitats, and encouraging a healthy balance of uses.

Last, but not least, the Committee—along with its partners, the Block Island Conservancy and the Town of New Shoreham—waged the ultimate defense of the Great Salt Pond by fighting, and winning, a nearly 20-year battle against the proposed expansion of Champlain’s Marina.

The Committee is a highly accomplished advocate, a leader and a great partner to Save The Bay and other watershed groups in the region.
