Job Opening: Director of Communications and Marketing

REPORTS TO:

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Communications & Marketing is responsible for developing and executing integrated, strategic communications strategies that tell the story of Save The Bay, its mission, and impact; expand Save The Bay’s audience and strengthen the organization’s relationships; and help Save The Bay meet its short- and long-term objectives in all areas, from development and events to the volunteer, advocacy, education, and habitat restoration programs.

Leading a support-oriented department of three, Save The Bay’s Director of Communications understands the role and responsibility of ensuring that every area of Save The Bay’s work is shared throughout the community.

This position requires a passionate, effective, and detail- and results-oriented communicator who is able to multitask while thinking critically and creatively in a fast-paced team environment.

As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Communications & Marketing also plays a role in leading the organization by setting an example of professionalism and ensuring Strategic Plan implementation, including goals related to environmental justice and DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and deliver an annual editorial calendar that incorporates print and digital communications assets, balances the storytelling needs from across the organization, upholds the organization’s brand identity and supports strategic plan objectives, including commitments to environmental justice and DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) .
  • Manage the planning, content curation, editing, design, production and distribution of Save The Bay’s key print publications, including semi-annual Tides magazine, annual report, International Coastal Cleanup Report, and Seal Monitoring Report.
  • Organize the planning and delivery of organizational content on, as well as maintenance of, digital platforms, including the Save The Bay website, and social media and digital business accounts and profiles.
  • Work with the Board’s Marketing and Communications Committee and the staff Leadership Team to set editorial and other communications goals that are consistent with STB’s mission and support the organization-wide goals outlined in the Strategic Plan.
  • Ensure a robust collection of photography, videography, and graphic assets to support Save The Bay’s editorial calendar and visual storytelling efforts.
  • Working alongside the rest of the leadership and development teams, develop, design, produce and distribute fundraising materials, including, but not limited to, the organization’s two appeal mailings.
  • Design marketing plans to promote Save The Bay’s public programs (Seal Tours, BayCamps, Lighthouse Tours and Aquarium); events (the Swim, Taste of The Bay and Artists for The Bay fundraisers, as well as the International Coastal Cleanup); and brand recognition
  • Cultivate relationships with, and field questions from, members of local and regional, traditional and digital media, while managing the creation and distribution of press releases and Save The Bay policy statements, public service announcements and commentary, and the organization of press conferences.
  • Conduct social and media listening among target audiences to inform organization-wide efforts and secure and uphold the highly reputable Save The Bay brand.
  • Manage, train and mentor two staff—the Multimedia Communications Specialist and the Social Media & Digital Content Specialist—to ensure their responsibilities and deliverables are in alignment with and supportive of the broader communications strategy.
  • Manage the departmental budget and make budgetary recommendations related to departmental marketing, production and printing needs.
  • Work with every area of the organization to support message synthesis for application throughout the organization, including, but not limited to: language in support of advocacy and public policy initiatives; legislative and regulatory objectives; habitat restoration activities; education programming; internal organizational policy; grantwriting; and facility and exhibit content.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A passion for the mission and work of Save The Bay
  • Exemplary writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategic communications plans that connect a variety of messages to a variety of target audiences
  • A comprehensive understanding of Southern New England’s media landscape, and experience with the latest earned media and public relations strategies
  • A robust writing portfolio that includes environmental, educational, and advocacy subject matter, as well as media writing, social media and marketing content
  • Experience with integrated marketing strategies and best practices
  • An understanding of WordPress, Blackbaud, VoterVoice and Creative Cloud products
  • A familiarity with Associated Press style
  • Leadership and team management experience
  • 7+ years’ experience in a related field (Years spent acquiring degrees in communications, marketing, advertising or related area included)
  • Spanish or other multilingual skills a plus.
