PROVIDENCE, R.I. \u2013 December 21, 2020 \u2013 <\/strong>Save The Bay applauds\u00a0Governor Gina Raimondo’s announcement that she is affirming Rhode Island’s support<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0Transportation Climate Initiative<\/a>, a regional agreement among Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states to reduce air pollution from the transportation sector. Air pollution from transportation accounts for approximately 35-40\u00a0percent\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0regional greenhouse gas emissions that\u00a0both\u00a0contribute to climate change and exacerbate\u00a0health problems,\u00a0such as asthma.<\/p>\n “The Narragansett Bay region is being hit hard by a rapidly changing climate. Rising seas and increasingly frequent and intense storms are harming habitats, causing damaging flooding along rivers and streams, eroding shorelines and threatening iconic public access points along the Bay,” said Jonathan Stone, Save The Bay Executive Director.<\/p>\n “We support Rhode Island’s participation in TCI as a way to further reduce greenhouse emissions.\u00a0The initiative imposes a declining cap on carbon emissions from the transportation sector and provides an efficient means to incentivize emission reductions.
